Welcome to the Safety Corner on HKICM’s website.
The Safety Corner is established with the aim to provide fellow members with general information and advice on occupational safety and health in construction site as well as the updated safety news and alerts in regards to the latest legislations, codes of practice and other safety related matters affecting the construction management professionals.
In addition, training courses and CPD events on safety related topics including updates on occupational safety and health legislation will be organized on regular basis to promote safety and health awareness of the members.

The following is a summary of the major laws and regulations related to Occupational Safety & Health applicable to construction works in Hong Kong:
(I) Chapter 509 of the Laws of Hong Kong

Content | > The OS&HO provides for the safety and health protection to employees in workplaces, both industrial and non-industrial. > Employers must, as far as reasonably practicable, ensure the safety and health of their employees at work by attending to the following: – providing and maintaining plant and work systems that are safe and without risks to health; – making arrangement for ensuring safety and absence of risks to health in connection with the use, handling, storage or transport of plant or substances; – providing all necessary information, instruction, training, and supervision for ensuring safety and health; – maintaining the workspace in a condition that is safe and without risks to health; – providing and maintaining safe access to and egress from the workplaces; and – providing and maintaining a working environment that is safe and without risks to health. > Specific requirement are given in the Regulations, such as: – Cap. 509A Section 18 – First aid facilities to be provided at workplace; – Cap. 509A Part VII – Manual Handling Operations; – Cap. P 509B – Occupational Safety & Health (Display Screen Equipment) Regulation. |

(II) Chapter 59 of the Laws of Hong Kong

Provision | > The FIUO provides for the safety and health protection to workers in an industrial undertaking. > Under the FIUO, every proprietor shall, as far as is reasonably practicable take care of the safety and health at work of all persons employed by him at the industrial undertaking by: – providing and maintaining plant and work systems that are safe and without risks to health; – making arrangements for ensuring safety and health in connection with the use, handling, storage and transport of articles and substances; – providing all necessary information, instruction, training, and supervision for ensuring safety and health; – providing and maintaining safe access to and egress from the workplaces; and – providing and maintaining a work environment that is safe and without risks to health. |

(III) Chapter 282 of the Laws of Hong Kong
