On November 5, 2024, council members of the HKICM had the privilege of touring the newly established Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) Collaboration Centre, named ‘WISE(智安基地)’ (Well-being, Safety, Innovation & Environment), at R2-4 Anderson Road Quarry Site. This thoughtfully designed two-story complex features a centralized management platform, a basketball court, dining areas, recreational facilities, equipment charging stations, washrooms, changing rooms, and shower amenities.
Ir Franco Cheung, Director of Projects at HKHS, emphasized the organization’s commitment to enhancing stakeholder well-being, fostering innovation in property development, and ensuring safety and conducive working environments on-site. He noted that HKHS has embraced an innovative spirit by adopting MiC technology since 2018, aligning with government initiatives to modernize construction methods. HKHS initiated the provision of a site office hub to enhance the well-being and safety of workers, ensuring they feel valued and cared for. The name WISE (智安基地) was proposed by the main contractor, Hip Hing Construction (HH). This initiative marks a cultural shift towards prioritizing worker welfare on construction sites. As WISE will remain operational throughout the construction period and beyond, with the majority of elements designed for reuse, it promotes sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and minimal mobility.
R2-4 is a demonstration project jointly collaborating by HKHS and HH to embrace new innovations in DfMA, MiC in VPK and VPB, steel scaffolding, robotics, the 4S system, IoT, BIM Cave, and MiMEP. By adopting innovative construction methods, they aim to maximize productivity and minimize on-site labor intensity, thereby enhancing safety and construction efficiency.
Additionally, HH employs fingerprint biometric authentication and advanced danger alert detection. These systems are integrated with the Centralized Management Platform (CMP) for efficient risk management.
Looking ahead, HKHS plans to implement MiC and the MiC Collaboration Centre approach in future projects where these methods can enhance construction efficiency.
HKICM IPP, Cr Terence Mang, echoed HKHS’s innovative approach to breaking down workplace hierarchy and promoting collaboration across all levels. He noted that this initiative not only benefits the construction site but also serves as a showcase for the industry. Cr Mang highlighted the critical importance of site safety supervision, asserting that employing competent construction managers and site supervisors is key to ensuring safety. Ir Franco agreed, reinforcing the value of this collaborative approach.
Trade workers’ representatives also participated in the visit, and three were interviewed about their impressions of WISE. They expressed their appreciation for the facilities, particularly the charging station for safe equipment handling and the leisure amenities, such as the basketball court. One female representative highlighted her enjoyment of the shower facilities, especially the availability of heated water.
During the visit, council members recognized how WISE could enhance safety management and health on construction sites by:
- Increasing workers’ safety awareness.
- Providing a space for communication and friendship-building, allowing workers to share experiences and challenges.
- Offering facilities in the entertainment area that help workers relax, preventing fatigue and maintaining a positive mindset.
- Fostering a multicultural environment where workers from diverse backgrounds can learn about each other’s cultures, enhancing mutual understanding and tolerance.
The project teams, comprising both the client and the main contractor, continue to collaborate with dedication, innovation, and a shared commitment to safety and excellence!
