On behalf of the HKICM SHE Committee, we are pleased to report on our successful technical site visit to Trunk Road T2 and Cha Kwo Ling Tunnel (Contract ED/2018/04) held on 9 May 2026.
This project serves as a strategic east-west link within Route 6, featuring a 3.0km dual two-lane trunk road with a 2.7km subsea tunnel section excavated by two TBMs, Victoria and Rhea. Beyond the essential civil, E&M, and landscaping works, the project stands out for its rigorous commitment to safety through the Smart Site Safety System (4S). This includes AI Lift and Smart Hooks that utilize real-time computer vision to monitor lifting zones and prevent accidents.
The visit also highlighted several pioneering innovations that push the boundaries of traditional tunneling. These include accessible TBM cutter-heads, which allow for safer tool changes in a controlled environment, and a peanut-shaped launching shaft designed to optimize structural stability without internal struts. Furthermore, the team showcased drilling robots with travelators to automate repetitive tasks and reduce worker fatigue, alongside LALG ETags for precision personnel and equipment tracking within the tunnel.
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) and Bouygues Travaux Publics for facilitating this visit. Special thanks are also extended to Mr. Martin Ho of Bouygues for his expert leadership and the insightful presentation that provided our members with a deep understanding of these advanced safety and engineering milestones.
