Navigating New Challenges in the Hong Kong Construction Industry

6 May 2026

Co-organised by HKICM and The QSi, the CPD Talk “Navigating New Challenges in the Hong Kong Construction Industry” was successfully held on 6 May 2026.

Cr Ko Chun Wa Johnason shared his extensive expertise on the shifting landscape of the construction sector, emphasizing the transformation of main contractors from traditional roles into more proactive functions as design-and-build contractors, operators, and investors. Participants gained insights into innovative public contract models, including Design-Build-Operate (DBO), Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT), Design-Build-Operate-Finance (DBOF), and NEC Framework Contracts. Additionally, the session explored vital cost control strategies, such as central procurement, alliance pledges for materials and services, and the adoption of China Standards for Railway Projects. These insights equipped main contractors with effective strategies to navigate challenges and adapt to the evolving construction landscape. The session concluded with an interactive Q&A.

The CPD was highly informative and meaningful with exchanges and interactions among the speaker and the participants.

Special thanks to Cr Betty LO (Chairperson of HKICM CPD Committee) for the great efforts in organising and joining this CPD event, and Cr Amanda WONG (Chairperson of HKICM CDR Committee) for the support in joining the event.

Finally, a certificate of appreciation was presented to Cr Ko Chun Wa Johnason for the excellent presentation and sharing.
