"Ying Wa Girls' School Redevelopment Project"

Hong Kong Institute of Construction Managers (HKICM); supported by AIB (HK) Chapter, organized a technical visit to Ying Wa Girl’s School Redevelopment project along Robinson Road & Breezy Path on 9, March 2019. More than 25 participants attended. The visit was hosted by the Project Manager of the Main Contractor - CR Construction. He briefly introduced the multi-disciplinary project scope of the redevelopment of 2 new building blocks, the site-specific challenges encountered due to the steep slope and big level difference and how they were overcome.

The re-development is located at two separate sites for two different new blocks. The $650M project took 5 years to complete, within which 3.5 years were spent on the demolition, site formation works and the foundation at the Mid-level Schedule Area I. Working in confined areas for soil nailing and retaining walls was difficult before the next stage of demolition of original building was allowed. Lack of main entrance access is another challenge, which induced difficulties in concreting and logistic planning for material delivery. Design buildability to the curvilinear forms of the building envelope and the eclipse form of the Sports hall also created difficulties requiring the design of safety platform, the use of steel formwork, detailed planning of concrete pours and high-standard external finishes for quality construction. The project has been substantially completed and taken over by the School management for official move-in. The visit was finished by an informative tour to different facilities and halls of the new School.
